Nairobi Kenya Restaurants - Chinese, Japanese & Thai Restaurants Kenya

Nairobi has plenty of Chinese restaurants but they aren't a cheap option. Almost all offer 'large' (good for two people) and 'small' portions (enough for one). Food is generally excellent, but all these places add 16% VAT to the bill, so prices can soon mount up.

Chinese & Thai Nairobi Restaurants

Panda Chinese Restaurant
Fedha towers, Kaunda St; mains kshs380-1480)

A spacious very classy Asian restaurant hidden away on Kaunda St. The staffs are attentive to the point of overzealousness, especially when its quiet and the food is the best Chinese chow I have seen in Nairobi. Lovers of Muzak will also be at their element here.

Hong Kong Restaurant
(College House, Koinange St; Mains Kshs 300-600)

A bright red restaurant with good food and not too much clichéd décor. It's the cheapest proper Chinese in town and is accordingly popular.

Bangkok Chinese restaurant
(Rank Xerox House, Parklands Rd, Westlands; Mains Kshs290-890)

The Bangkok has been in business for a number of years but was clearly named by someone with no grasp of geography, as there's virtually nothing Thai on the menu at all. If the disappointment gets too much you can always crack open a bottle of Moet (Kshs 8990)

Tanager Bar & Restaurant
(Rehema House, Kaunda St. mains Kshs 280-350)

A cheap and simple Chinese African eatery right in the city centre.

China Jiangsu Restaurant
(Westlands Rd mains Kshs 200-600)

A stylish rooftop restaurant above Soin arcade shopping centre. Prices are very reasonable considering the classy balcony setting, and the food's not to be sniffed at either.

Siam Thai
(Unga House, Muthithi Rd, Westlands, mains Kshs 250-680)

This attractive restaurant has an extensive menu of actual Thai food and a very good reputation. Unga House can be reached from either Woodvale grove or Muthithi Rd.

Japanese Nairobi Kenya Restaurants

Restaurant Akasaka
(Standard St, mains Kshs 450-800)

A wonderful Japanese restaurant next to the six eighty Hotel. It's always a little quiet, but this fits the stylish Japanese décor and the food is very authentic. There's even a tatami room (reserve in advance) where you can eat at traditional low tables. Akasaka runs the full gamut of Japanese cuisine including udon noodles, sushi sets, tempura, teriyaki, and sukiyaki as well as great miso soup. Good value set lunches is also available.

Furasato Japanese Restaurant
(Karuna Rd, Westlands; set meals Kshs 700-1500)

Behind the sarit centre, this is a very stylish place with seductive set Japanese meals including sushi, teppanyaki and tempura. The sushi and sashimi are delicious. Reservations are recommended.

There are many other Asian restaurants in Nairobi including some in leafy suburbs that may cost even twice as much as the ones included here. Depending on your taste you can enquire of the Chinese and Japanese restaurants in such areas.

Remember here that at this level of class, what your bill not only includes the food mass but also the dining ambience-something you are unlikely to take home in your tummy though.

All in all you are most likely going to find a restaurant, if not two that suits your tastes and pocket size. There is simply no lack in Asian restaurants here.

A List of Common Soy Foods & Health Benefits

I will list common soy foods that many people around the world are using in their healthy diets. Soy contain complete protein and is the easiest protein to digest of protein class. Soy contains little or no fat and no cholesterol. The list is as follows:

Miso is a medicinal food made from fermented soybean paste. It is helps to alkalize our body, lowers cholesterol, represses carcinogens, helps to neutralize allergens and pollutants from the environment, and provides an immune enhancing environment.

Miso is a tasty and healthy base as a salt substitute, soup, sauces, spreads, cooking stock, dips, and soy sauce. There are various strengths, kinds, and flavors of miso such as chickpea which is (mild), and hatcho (strong). Natto miso is the sweetest of the miso's, natto is a mix of soybeans, barley and barley malt, kombu (a seaweed), ginger, and sea salt. Unpasteurized is most popular for a healing diet, since beneficial bacteria and other enzymes, and flavor is undamaged.

Miso is so concentrated that you must use no more than one half teaspoon of dark miso, or one teaspoon of light miso per individual. Miso should be dissolved in a small amount of water to activate the beneficial enzymes before adding it to your recipe. Please remember when you use miso disregard adding SALT.

Soy Cheese is made from soy milk and is cholesterol and lactose free. A small amount of calcium caseinate (a milk product) is added to allow soy cheese to melt. A selection of cheddar, cream cheese types, jack, mozzarella, are readily available. When replacing low fat cheese with soy cheese, use it cup for cup.

Soy Milk is very nutritious, delicious, smooth and versatile. It is vegetable based, cholesterol and lactose free with unsaturated polyunsaturated fat. Soy milk contains less calcium and calories than milk, but contains more protein and iron. In comes plain or in a vanilla flavor. Soy milk is used cup for cup as milk for baking, health shakes, and teas. Use the plain for savory dishes and flavored for sweet dishes and on cereal. Soy ice cream, soy yogurt are available in a wide variety of flavors. Soy mayonnaise has been developed and has the same consistency of dairy mayonnaise.

Tamari is a wheat free soy sauce lower in sodium and richer in flavor than regular soy sauce. Bragg's Liquid Aminos is an excellent, energizing protein broth and is in the tamari family but is unfermented, lower in sodium and contains 8essential amino acids. Tempeh is a meaty Indonesian fermented soy food, containing complete protein and all essential amino acids. It has a robust texture and mushroom like aroma. Tempeh is also a predigested product due to the enzyme action in its culturing, making it very affordable.

Tofu is a delicious soy food, made from soybeans, water, and nigari a mineral rich seawater precipitate. Fresh tofu has a light, delicate character that can take on any flavor perfectly from savory to sweet. It comes firm pressed in cubes, a soft delicate for, or silken with a custard like texture. Tofu is a versatile food source, it is nutritionally balanced healing food, an nutritionally adequate source of complex carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. It is easy on the digestive system, full of soluble fiber, and non-mucous way to add richness and creamy texture to a recipe. My favorite smoothie is a blend of silken tofu, soy or rice milk. 1/2 banana, 1/2 dice apple, 1/4 cup of blueberry and cranberries, 1 T. honey, and a dash of cayenne pepper.

Tofu Facts:

Tofu is lower in calories. Eight ounces has only 164 calories.
Tofu is rich in organic calcium. Eight ounces supplies the the same amount of calcium as eight ounces of milk, and digests easily.
Tofu is high in iron. Eight ounces supplies the same amount of iron as 2 ounces of beef liver or 4 eggs.
Tofu has high quality protein. Eight ounces supplies the same amount of protein as 3 1/4 ounce of beef, 5 1/2 ounce of hamburger, 1 2/3 cups of milk, or 2 ounce of regular cheese, or 2 eggs, but it is lower in fat than any of these.
Be creative with the soy foods, blend it, stir fry it, toss it, marinate it, and most of all enjoy it.

Different Hormonal Therapies For Menopause

Hormone therapies come in many forms as well as dosages depending on the woman. Some will be prescribed a pill form of estrogen which is combined with a synthetic form of progesterone known as Progestin. Estrogen can come in many forms and may be prescribed as a patch, a cream, a topical ointment as well as gels. There are also time released tablets which administer estrogen in controlled amounts to the woman as the day progresses.

In 2002 a clinical trial study known as the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) reported that hormone therapy actually poses more health risks than the before though of benefits of this treatment. Hormone therapy is not the magical cure for aging as was once believed, however it's still the most effective treatment for uncomfortable menopausal symptoms for the majority of women.

Despite risks such as more likelihood of heart disease, breast cancer, & stroke Hormone Replacement therapy still seems to be the marketed treatment of choice for many women. Some reports indicate that women taking a Hormone Replacement Therapy can actual protect the heart. Information concerning Hormone Replacement therapy can be disconcerting and may cause alarm for many women.

There are more natural treatments available with nominal side effects. Some alternative therapies are: food/diet, acupressure and acupuncture, exercise, ayurveda, herbal medicine to name a few. A cup of soy milk daily can help in common menopause symptoms such as mood swings,, hot flashes, insomnia, decreased sexual interest and bone loss. Eating tofu or a soybean curd can also be essential in helping the body to restore natural hormone levels. Other foods to consider are: whole grains, seaweed, beans, fresh vegetables and miso soup. Daily exercise will greatly assist in the regulation of hormones. Dryness caused from menopause can also be relieved by consuming your fair share of water daily.

Chinese medicine once again makes it's way to western culture by offering some really great alternatives as well. The chinese have used black sesame seeds, String beans, Barley, Mung beans and sprouts, Wheat germ and wheat germ oil. A daily does of 100-400 milligrams of Royal jelly help to tone the female hormonal system. Since menopause is a naturally occurring event for women, it is best to understand that the symptoms at some point will diminish, so a woman should seriously consider what all of her options are before deciding on a treatment.

Being Fat in Japan Is Illegal

Always follow the money...

While you do not go to jail for being overweight in Japan, your company many be paying a hefty price for you being considered hefty yourself. When I first heard this of course I was taken aback for a brief moment. Instantly I figured out what this was all about. I am sure many of you were or are screaming inside about your personal rights and liberties to be overweight, obese, or fat. This is not the case with this law when you look a little closer.

In 1976, what is Russia used to be the U.S.S.R. (United Soviet Socialist Republic). At that time in Russians lives when it came to healthcare, the government was paying the bill. The USSR scientists and doctors knew the dangers of eating unhealthy, radiated or microwave food. The government banned the use of microwaves throughout the whole country. Why make someone sick only to have to turn around and pay for the sickness that you just cased? If you did not know that radiating your food makes it toxic and somewhere between unhealthy and dangerous, know you know.

Japan is simply following in similar footsteps. The corporations of Japan and its government are tied to each other for medical healthcare for its people. Guys who have a 34 inch waistline and girls who have a 36 inch waistline are now costing their employers significant extra monies for what they consider a state of unhealthiness. The facts are, by being overweight you have already proven to cost more medically. I watched a video of this on CNN and they profiled a typical Japanese lunch. Fish, rice, and miso soup were all of 600 calories. A burger, fries, and soda at McDonalds were 1,300 calories.

Japanese employees are now taking stairs instead of elevators. Getting exercise music pumped into the workplace twice daily for stretching and stationary calisthenics. There are exercise stations on every other floor now too while you are using the stairways.

Talk is cheap and numbers never lie. Because Japanese people eat healthier including lots of fish, rice, and fresh or lightly cooked vegetables, they live longer and healthier lives. They eat almost zero wheat and bread products. Right now in Japan, 3% of the female population is considered obese or overweight. In the United States, 34% of women are obese or overweight and climbing higher. The statistic of new diabetics is double in the past 20 years and still climbing. A life-expectancy for women in Japan is 85; it is 80 if you live in America.

Japanese people do not run to their doctors and medicate themselves like Americans. In the end, this is not a human rights story. This is not a story of victims and crime. This is a story of dollars and sense, common sense that is.

1 in 14,000,000 people has a chance of winning the lottery. 1 in 6,000,000 will die in a plane or jet crash. 1 in 4,000,000 will die in an automobile accident. 1 in 2 will die of heart disease. 1 in 3 is diabetic or pre-diabetic. Heart disease kills more people that the next 6 diseases and car accidents combined. Your heart and arteries need your help. Your kid's hearts and arteries are going to be worse. Wake up people. We can change this for you by doing one simple thing. We share how to cleanse your whole arterial system. While you are at it, you may wish to start with a colon cleanse first. Wake up. Dr. Mike

Ration space

A new type of miso soup is being developed as space food by the National Space Development Agency of Japan and Riken Vitamin. In space, floating drops of miso soup can damage computer systems. However, when Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata tried to eat instant miso soup through a straw, the straw became clogged with wakame seaweed.(+_+) This has required ingredients which can go through straws smoothly to be developed. Most of the conventional space foods are for American astronauts.

Learn to Make Japanese Miso Soup

If you have been eating at Japanese restaurants, you may have wondered how to duplicate the tasty and healthy Miso Soup you have enjoyed there. Here is the proper way to make it as I learned from a great Japanese cook.

You can now have this delicious hot soup in your home any time you want. You will most likely find that it tastes as good or better than at your favorite restaurant.

First you have to locate the right ingredients and that will require going to the right grocery store. You need to look up where the closest Oriental Grocery or Japanese Grocery is located.

When you visit this establishment, go to the refrigerated section and purchase a small tub of Miso. There should be a selection of different types of Miso paste. If possible try to buy a light or medium colored variety for your first soup. It should cost about five dollars and have about a half pound of Miso paste in it. This will keep you in Miso soup for a while and you will also find that Miso is great for other recipes in the future.

Find fresh Tofu in the refrigerated area also and buy a small tub. I usually buy the firm variety so that it does not crumble while in the soup. A nice thing about making Miso soup is that the entire recipe is really up to your taste and each cook has there own variables of each ingredient.

You also need to find or ask for "Negi". If that sounds strange, don't worry, that means scallion or green onion in Japanese. Buy a small bunch of Negi. You also need some "Wakame". Wakame is the tasty green leaf vegetable that you may have noticed before in Miso soup. It is a special sea vegetable, seaweed, if you will. Wakame can either be bought dried in a small couple oz packet, alternately you can purchase a small plastic package of about a quarter pound of salted fresh Wakame. Now you should find a small package of fresh Shiitake mushrooms.

Finally buy some "Dashi", this can come in teabags that contain the Dashi. It is a very mild and tasty fish stock flavoring. There usually is a big selection of types so you can ask someone at the grocery store which one they recommend.

If you read my article on making Japanese style rice, you could also pick up the correct rice to make that you can eat with your soup.

So, to make Miso Soup, here is your list of ingredients to buy and a description of each:

Miso Paste -- soybean paste
Dashi tea bags -- soup stock in teabag form.

Wakame -- seaweed, either dried or salted fresh is ok

Negi -- scallion
Shiitake -- mushroom
Tofu - soybean curd - this is an excellent source of protein, by the way.
Resist the urge to buy anything else right now because it is time to go home and make your first real Miso soup!

When you are home, take out your Wakame and soak it in a bowl of water, you only need a teaspoon of flakes or if you have the salted variety take about a six inch strand. The quantities are to your taste. Completely wash out the salt in the fresh strand of Wakame and then put it in a fresh bowl of water to soak while you are cooking. Sometimes it actually is better to soak salted Wakame for an hour or longer so that it is more tender. I usually keep a soaked supply in my refrigerator and make more every few days. If you are short on time, cut the washed fresh salted Wakame into one inch pieces and boil it in the Dashi you are making as this works nicely to tenderize the Wakame.

Wash a few Shiitake mushrooms with water and discard the tough stems. Slice each mushroom into quarter inch strips. For the soup, the object is to boil a pot of water with a Dashi bag. Figure about a quart per 2 people but this is really something you can do by eye. Take your Shiitake mushrooms and add them to the soup. Boil gently 5 or 10 minutes to cook the mushrooms. Bring down the heat to a gentle simmer and add a couple tablespoons of Miso paste as per your taste. Remember how it tasted at the restaurant, use this as your guide to deciding how much Miso to add. You will have to stir the Miso paste a bit to dissolve it. A good trick to help dissolve the Miso is to put it into a strainer and rub it through into the soup. Taste your soup and make adjustments to the amount Miso as needed. Do not be concerned over ingredient amounts, just taste as you go and make your soup to your own taste.

OK, let the Soup continue to simmer gently and if you are soaking Wakame, drain it and slice it into one inch pieces. Put the Wakame in the soup and let it cook about 5 minutes.

Take about half the tub of Tofu and cut it into cubes. I always think it is fun to cube Tofu! Put the Tofu cubes into the soup and let it heat up for a minute or two but do not boil, just let it heat the Tofu.

Next, find your "Negi, do you remember what that is? Clean one stalk and with a very sharp knife and cutting board, finely slice it crosswise and put the Negi (scallion) aside for later.

That's it! You are done!

Serve the soup into small bowls and put some of the fresh uncooked Negi on the top of the soup right before you eat it.

I am now going to teach you one more useful Japanese word. If you remember it, you can definitely feel good saying it while you are eating something that is particularly wonderful.

Oishii!

You can pronounce it like this: Oyy Shee!

It means delicious!

Sick of Being Sick? Easy Ways to Build Your Immunity

Whether its flu season, or just a general tendency to fall sick, a boost to the immune system can't hurt. The old adage, "you are what you eat", is the key. Build up your immune system by being careful about what you put into your body. Avoid synthetic multi-vitamins and supplements - go with what Mother Nature has to offer. By incorporating these foods into your daily diet, you can give your white blood cells some extra help.

Make fish the excellent, healthy new addition to your diet. Certain fish, like sardines, contain vitamin D, which provides great support to your immune system. Crabmeat is also beneficial - being high in zinc, it helps enhance the production and release of antibodies. It also increases the amount of T-cells in your body - cells which help combat infection. Aside from seafood, zinc is also found in various other meats, such as beef and dark turkey meat.
Fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, are also a great natural way to build up your immunity. Vitamin C, vitamin B, and vitamin A, in particular, are vital for strengthening the immune system. Lemons, papayas, bell peppers, oranges, grapefruits, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and various berries all contain one or several vitamins. It is also highly advisable to cut down on your sugar intake, particularly refined sugar. Sugar eats up all the vitamin B in your body and reduces the body's production of antibodies, leading to a drastic weakening of the immune system.
Seeds, grains and nuts are also beneficial. Sesame seeds, oats, sunflower seeds, and cashews all contain phytonutrients which help combat bacteria and infections.
Garlic is an antibiotic and contains compounds which help white bloods cells become quicker and more aggressive in response to threatening bacteria. It is also a powerful antioxidant which helps prevent heart attacks and fights cancerous cells in the body. Onions and spices are also advised for the immune system. Cinnamon, oregano, cayenne, and turmeric are all beneficial and can easily be added to your daily diet. All these spices are also conducive to a healthy body and vigorous immune system.
Soups are yet another healthy and delicious way to boost your immune system. Good old chicken soup is a great defense against cold and flu viruses. Miso soup, an exotic but simple Japanese soup, is antibacterial and boosts the productions of antibodies. Tomato soup is also an excellent option. For those who are unable to eat tomatoes raw in salads, soup can be a healthy and equally nutritious alternative. The tomato is a wonder fruit - it helps the body fight infection, kills cancer cells, is an antioxidant, and also contains vitamin C.
Flush your body with beneficial liquids. Drink plenty of water - not only does it hydrate your body, it also stimulates the brain and helps your system flush out all the bacteria and impurities. Chamomile tea is also highly beneficial as it contains phytonutrients. These are nutrients which function simultaneously as antioxidants, detoxifiers, and also strengthen the immune system to a great degree, even against cancer cells. Aside form this, chamomile tea is soothing and relaxes the nerves.

Keep in mind that factors like stress or depression can cause healthy eating habits to deteriorate by triggering cravings for rich, comforting foods which are high in fat,
